Blue Pool - Hveravellir, Iceland da orvaratli

Finally most of the highland roads in Iceland are open after winter closures. Now since I have a 4x4 I can venture into the highlands and mountains to areas previously to difficult to access by my old Opel Astra (although it got extensive training in offroad driving). This is the geothermal area called Hveravellir in central Iceland on a route called Kjölur. The area was first inhabited by outlaws, fleeing from punishment and hiding in the mountains. This area provided some shelter and warmth during the harsh winter months. Early 20th century a manned weather station was constructed here, seen here on the top of the hill. Weather observers have now been replaced by automation and electronics. This pool has a striking blue color which reveals its beauty in twilight conditions. The color comes from silica rich minerals in the pool. www.arcticphoto.is
