A light station was established on the westernmost point of this cape in 1790, although lights were displayed for centuries earlier from a nearby monastery that is now demolished. The present lighthouse was built in 1886, replacing an earlier one. The square stone tower, painted white with stone trim is 89 feet tall and rises from a one story u-shaped keeper's house. A modern beacon provides 3 red flashes every 15 seconds. 6 keepers are on duty here because they are also responsible for the lighthouse on the Berlengas islands just off shore.
