The main entrance to the Alba Carolina Citadel is Gate III built between 1715 and 1728 CE. Atop the gate is an equestrian statue of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI dressed in a Roman tunic and imperial helmet with Turkish prisoners on the ground around him. The additional Turkish prisoners chained to columns on the outer ends of the gate further emphasize the triumph of the Habsburg army over the Ottomans. The crowned double-headed eagle above the central archway clutches in its claws the insignia of Habsburg imperial power. The two bas reliefs are symbolic depictions of Prince Eugene of Savoy, a general and statesman of the Holy Roman Empire, who pushed the Ottomans to the south bank of the Danube River, liberating central Europe in 1717 CE. The fortress at Alba Iulia—the Alba Carolina Citadel—was built from 1715 to 1738 CE on the site of two earlier fortifications (the Roman castrum from 106 CE and the medieval fortress from the 16th-17th centuries CE). The largest citadel in Romania, it was built at the behest of and named after Charles IV (Carol IV in Romanian), the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary from 1711 CE until his death in 1740 CE. Alba Iulia was one of the oldest settlements in Romania, a large military as well as economic center during Roman occupation when it was known as Apulum in the 2nd to 4th centuries CE. The city served as the capital of the Principality of Transylvania from 1570 to 1692 CE. On Google Earth: Gate III 46° 4'1.56"N, 23°34'28.65"E
