Monumento às Bandeiras, designed by Italian-Brazilian sculptor Víctor Brecheret, was inaugurated in Praça Armando Salles de Oliveira, next to Parque do Ibirapuera, on January 25, 1953 to help mark the 399th anniversary of the founding of São Paulo. The massive 8-meter high, 40-meter long granite sculpture was first designed, in the form of a plaster miniature, in 1920 and work on the final product, which was crafted from 240 fifty-ton granite blocks, sits atop a 2.54-meter granite pedestal in 1936. The monument is a tribute to the Bandeirantes (Portuguese for "followers of the banner"), members of 16th-18th century South American slave hunting expeditions whose explorations into unmapped territory in search of precious metals in the 17th and 18th centuries widened the then borders of Portuguese Brazil.
