The Somme, France. Lochnagar Crater. da amandabhslater

This is the largest crater on the western front. It was one of 16 mines detonated on 1st July 1916 and was intended to remove a German strongpoint in this area. It was started by the 185th Tunnelling Company and on detonation contained a charge of some 60,000 lbs. The crater today is approximately 300ft across and 90 feet deep, it was reported that the debris from the explosion rose over 5000ft in the air. Over the years many of the craters have been filled in and therefore in 1979 an Englishman named Richard Dunning purchased the crater in order to preserve the site.
